Clinical history:
A 54-year-old man presented to the hospital with a 12-hour history of severe colicky pain, nausea, and vomiting. His history indicated that he had had intermittent right subcostal pain for 3 years, for which he had not consulted a physician. He was diagnosed with acute intestinal obstruction, and laparotomy was performed.
Pathology:
This segment of the small intestine has been opened to reveal a large pigmented, oval gallstone with a fatty surface. This is an example of gallstone intestinal obstruction.
