Erler-Zimmer GmbH & Co. KG 3D model of chondrosarcoma of the femur and hip joint:
- Model: MP2112
- Clinical History:
A teenage boy presents with pain in his buttocks after riding a horse. Examination reveals a large, deep lump. After biopsy and imaging, a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma is made, and radical surgical removal of the right leg is performed. - Pathology:
The specimen consists of the top of the femur and its articulation with the pelvic bone. In the neck and head of the femur and replacing most of the ileum is a lobular pale gray tumor with areas of cavitation, necrosis, and hemorrhage. The tumor extends beyond the bone into the surrounding soft tissues and appears capsular. The presence of infiltration, necrosis, and hemorrhage are macroscopic features of malignancy. - Additional Information:
Chondrosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor with osseous differentiation. It is a rare form of cancer, accounting for approximately 20% of bone tumors. The only available treatment is surgical excision, as current adjuvant therapies are ineffective. The pelvic location creates specific technical difficulties for both excision and reconstruction.
