Erler-Zimmer GmbH & Co. KG 3D model of metastatic malignant melanoma:

  • Model: MP2117
  • Clinical History:
A 65-year-old man complained of pain in his left thigh. He had a history of cutaneous melanoma on his left leg, treated with surgical excision and radiotherapy. On examination, he was cachectic with a large, enlarged liver and a discharging sinus in his left thigh surrounded by black nodules. He was hospitalized and died of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
  • Pathology:
The specimen is the patient's proximal right femur, cut longitudinally to show the cut surface. The material canal is filled with tumor tissue that varies in color from pale brown to black. The cancellous bone has been completely destroyed by larger deposits that appear dark and measure up to 3 cm in diameter. Elsewhere, the pale brown tumor diffusely infiltrates the bone marrow. The cortical bone has been spared, although at the junction of the shaft and neck, the cortical bone medially is discolored and thickened. These are metastatic sites from cutaneous melanoma.
  • Additional Information:
Melanoma is a malignant skin cancer associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Other risk factors for developing melanoma include fair skin color, a large number of melanocytic nevi, severe sunburn in childhood, and immunosuppression. It accounts for about 51% of all skin cancer diagnoses, but has the highest mortality rate of all skin cancers.
