This 63-year-old man had been hospitalized several times for bleeding from esophageal varices. On admission, he presented with mild fever, jaundice, and severe hand tremors. He had distinctive symptoms, including ascites, prominent periumbilical veins, and hemorrhoids. He had massive hematemesis and died. - Pathology:
A liver section prepared for display with a serrated surface showing numerous well-defined nodules ranging in diameter from 1 to 7 mm. The external surface of the liver is also nodular and irregular. This is an example of cirrhosis of the liver, with a mixed micro- and macro-nodular pattern and marked fatty change. - Additional information:
The most common cause of cirrhosis and fatty liver is chronic alcoholism.
