Chondrosarcoma 3D model by Erler-Zimmer GmbH & Co. KG:

  • Model: MP2116
  • Clinical History:
A 57-year-old man presented with recurrent right femoral pain. Examination of the right femur revealed no abnormalities. A femoral radiograph showed bone resorption associated with enlargement and periosteal reaction proximally in the right femur. A CT scan of the extremity revealed a mass proximally in the right femur. A sample of the tumor was taken. He subsequently underwent a right upper femoral debridement with implant replacement.
  • Pathology:
The specimen includes the head, neck, and upper third of the shaft of the right femur, incised longitudinally to show the cut surface. The material canal contains an oval tumor in the upper part of the shaft, measuring 6.5 cm in greatest diameter. The tumor is not surrounded and has hemorrhages, pale hyaline, and a cystic surface. Histologically, it is a low-grade chondrosarcoma.
  • Additional Information:
Chondrosarcomas are malignant bone tumors that produce cartilage. They are the third most common primary bone malignancy after myeloma and osteosarcoma. Conventional tumors are the most common subtype of chondrosarcoma, accounting for 90% cases. Less commonly diagnosed subtypes include clear cell, differentiated, and mesenchymal chondrosarcomas.
