Soil Probes
The WET Sensor is critical for precision horticulture and soil science and can be used in both soils and growing media. It is unique in its ability to measure pore water conductivity (ECp), the EC of water that is available to the plant.
Quick checks of growing conditions
The sensor is easily embedded in substrates, composts and most soils. In less than 5 seconds, it measures water content (%), pore water conductivity (ECp) and temperature - all important indicators of root zone health.
Pore water conductivity
The WET Sensor can calculate the pore water conductivity (ECp), which is the EC of water available to plant roots. The ECp calculation is derived from an approximate relationship between dielectric properties. This is particularly useful for WET Sensor measurements that are made at the same frequency, in the same defined area of the soil/substrate. The approximation is suitable for most soils and is particularly accurate in mineral wool and other artificial substrate materials.
Fertilizer application and hydroponics
Where plants are grown in artificial media, using hydroponic or drip irrigation systems, fertilizer is typically delivered through the irrigation water. Fertilizer levels are controlled by monitoring water content and conductivity (EC) and adjusting the amount of liquid fertilizer added to the irrigation water. Delta-T Devices WET Sensor is perfect for monitoring this important information.
Growing container shrubs and trees
Fertilizers are sometimes applied by drip irrigation, but are often applied as controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). How they are absorbed depends on several factors, including weather conditions and watering regime. The Delta-T Devices WET Sensor can be used to measure EC in the growing medium, reducing the guesswork in this process.
Soil salinity
If irrigation water is recycled or sourced from rivers and aquifers with high levels of dissolved salts, soil salinity can build up over time. Soil salinization will ultimately reduce yields. WET Sensor quickly and efficiently tests soil salinity, ensuring farmers have the information they need to take immediate corrective action.
WET Kit
WET Sensors are usually ordered as complete kits, which include the WET Sensor, the HH2 Moisture Meter and a convenient carrying case. There are three types of kits, each with a different set of substrate calibrations. For more information, please download our Soil Moisture Measurement Catalog.
Reading and writing data
For portable systems, data reading and storage is done using the HH2 Moisture Meter. Alternatively, the WET Sensor can be connected to the GP1 Data Logger or GP2 Data Logger and Control Unit, allowing you to monitor growing conditions for hours, days or longer. The smart relay on these data loggers allows you to control the amount of water based on EC or temperature.
Soil and horticultural substrate calibrations
If the WET Sensorius is purchased with the HH2 Moisture Meter (as part of the WET kit), it will be equipped with calibrations for common mineral soils, organic soils, sandy soils, clay soils, coco fiber substrates, peat potting mixes, greenhouse “mineral” soils and rock wool products (vertical and horizontal measurement).
If the WET Sensorius is used with a GP1 Data Logger or GP2 Logger, it will be supplied with calibrations for common mineral soils, organic soils, sandy soils and clay soils by default. Two additional calibration upgrade kits are available – one containing calibrations for coco coir substrates, peat potting mixes and greenhouse mineral soils, and the other for rock wool products (vertical and horizontal measurements).
