Research Level Soil Moisture Sensor
The SM150T’s advanced proprietary electronics and rugged construction create a highly reliable soil moisture sensor with exceptional salt and temperature stability. The SM150T is designed to withstand long-term underground installation – the sensor, connectors and cable are all environmentally protected to IP68. It offers a moisture accuracy of ± 3% (after soil-specific calibration) and the built-in temperature sensor achieves an accuracy of ± 0.5°C.
Data recording and reading
The SM150T is a dual-purpose soil moisture sensor - it can be used portable to obtain instant moisture readings or left mounted in the ground, connected to a data logger, providing long-term moisture and temperature data.
For installed sensors:
The SM150T can be logged with any Delta-T Devices data logger and many other manufacturers' logging devices (simple 0-1 V output for humidity, 10K thermistor for temperature). To measure temperature, the sensor must be fully buried and connected to the data logger.
For portable use:
The SM150T is available as a convenient SM150 kit, which includes a case and an HH150 reading meter. Learn more about the SM150 kit.
It should be noted that the HH150 meter supplied with the SM150 kit is a read-only device. If a computer connection is required for data storage and download, the SM150T should be used with the HH2 Moisture Meter.
NB: When used in portable mode, the SM150T sensor does not provide a temperature reading.
Installation
The SM150T soil moisture sensor is easy to insert and install – its sharp pins cause minimal soil disturbance and preserve the original soil structure around the measuring rods. When buried deep, the cylindrical shape makes it easy to install in regrown holes. The sensor’s crushable base can be connected to optional 50 cm and 100 cm extension tubes, which aid in installation and removal.
The SM150T uses the same high-quality range of cables and extension tubes as the ML3 and EQ3 sensors.
Calibration
The SM150T is fully equipped with general calibrations for mineral and organic soils. A two-point soil-specific calibration can be performed for greater accuracy if required.
Adaptation
Soil science – The SM150T is easy to install and provides accurate soil moisture and temperature measurements, facilitating vertical profiling of both parameters. (Temperature measurement requires sensor burial).
Horticulture – With a length of only 143 mm (tubes 51 mm), the SM150T can be installed in grow bags and flower pots. For portable use, the SM150 kit provides a simple, robust solution for checking the uniformity of growing conditions in a variety of growing media. Calibrations for portable use include mineral, peat moss, coco, rock wool and perlite materials (plus a net voltage output). SM150T applications in horticulture.
