- Model: MP2105
- Clinical History:
A 76-year-old woman was presented to the emergency department with sudden loss of consciousness. She had signs of a left-sided cerebrovascular accident. She was intubated and treated for stroke. On admission to the ICU, she noted a fixed mass in the left chest with palpable lymphadenopathy in the left axilla. She died of respiratory-related pneumonia. - Pathology:
The specimen is the patient's left breast mounted to show the cut surface. At the same time, underlying and attached to the skin, there is a large oval tumor mass, 11 cm in maximum diameter. The tumor is attached to the underlying muscles. The tumor is not encapsulated and has a variable cut surface with areas of necrosis, hemorrhage, and cyst formation. This is an adenocarcinoma of the breast that has involved the regional lymph nodes. - Additional Information:
Breast carcinoma is the second most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in women worldwide. It is rare in women under the age of 30, but the incidence increases significantly after the age of 30, reaching a peak between the ages of 70 and 80. The incidence has decreased since the introduction of breast cancer screening programs that offer mammography to women at risk and public awareness and education on breast self-examination. However, breast cancer still remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in women.
