    A 5-year-old boy presented with a history of constipation since birth. Barium enema showed a narrowed rectum with a dilated sigmoid colon. Surgical removal of the narrowed section of bowel was attempted, but the patient died during surgery.
  • Pathology:
    This postmortem section of the sigmoid colon has been opened to expose the internal surface. The proximal part of the colon (sigma) shows significant dilatation with loss of normal mucosal ink. The distal part of the colon (rectum) has a normal diameter and normal mucosal ink, but the ganglion cell manenteric plexus is absent. This is Hirschsprung's disease, also known as congenital aganglionic megacolon.
