Erler-Zimmer GmbH & Co. KG Cholelithiasis Gallstones 3D Model:

  • Model Number: MP2075
  • Clinical history:
A middle-aged woman was evaluated for recurrent episodes of epigastric pain. Endoscopy did not reveal any gastric ulcers. Cholangiogram showed a non-functioning gallbladder. Unfortunately, the patient died later after this procedure from myocardial infarction.
  • Pathology:
The specimen is a section of liver with attached gallbladder that has been opened to reveal six large, multi-branched mixed cysts. This is a specimen of cholelithiasis (gallstones).
  • Additional information:
Gallstones are a mixture of cholesterol, calcium salts, bilirubin, protein, and mucus. They are more common in people of fair skin. Risk factors include age (over 50 years) and female gender, along with genetic factors, pregnancy, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Lifestyle factors such as rapid weight loss and certain medications (e.g., erythromycin, ampicillin, octreotide, cephalosporin) may also promote the formation of gallstones.
