Erler-Zimmer GmbH & Co. KG 3D model of multiple lung carcinoma:

  • Model Number: MP2065
  • Clinical history:
This 47-year-old woman was admitted for terminal carcinomatosis. On examination, a hard liver and a right pelvic mass were palpable. She had been suffering from constitutional symptoms for months and finally sought medical attention. She was admitted for palliative care and died shortly thereafter.
  • Pathology:
The left intact lung has several pale tumor nodules of varying size scattered throughout the lung structure. Several nodes are confluent at the root. The root lymph nodes contain pale tumor material. Small tumor nodules 2 mm to 2 cm are visible under thickened pleura on the thoracic, mediastinal, and diaphragmatic surfaces. Histologically, these were metastatic adenocarcinoma foci. Postmortem examination revealed ovarian adenocarcinoma with metastases to the lungs, heart, liver, and pericardium.
  • Additional information:
Lung metastases are more common than primary lung cancer. Malignancies originating anywhere in the body can spread to the lungs because of their rich blood supply and lymphatic drainage. Sarcomas usually metastasize via the bloodstream, while carcinomas spread either via the bloodstream or the lymphatic system, or both.
