Delta-T BF5 Sunlight Probe Features and Description

The BF5 Sunlight Sensor is a universal solar radiation sensor that measures incident solar radiation. This reliable sensor uses a photodetector with a unique computer-generated shadow ring structure to measure incident solar radiation. The microprocessor calculates the global and diffuse radiation components and determines the sunlight condition.

Two analog input signals provide global and diffuse radiation, from which direct and diffuse radiation indicators are derived. The sunlight status is indicated by a digital signal. All this data can be connected to GP1 or GP2 data loggers or other common environmental monitoring devices. An internal heater maintains the sensor down to -20 °C, preventing dew, frost and snow.

Sunlight Duration

The BF5 Sunlight Sensor indirectly measures sunlight hours using a simple equation based on total Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) and the ratio of total PAR to direct PAR. This meets the World Meteorological Organization's sunlight duration limit of 120 W/m2 in the solar beam. The BF5 Sunlight Probe does not need to be adjusted or repositioned to track the sun – a distinct advantage over devices with shadow rings. There are no complex electro-mechanical devices and no need to interpret burnt paper tracks.

SunScan Canopy Analysis System

The BF5 Sunlight Probe can be used as an integral part of the SunScan Canopy Analysis system. The SunScan Probe is a 1 m long array of light sensors designed to measure canopy cover and estimate LAI (Leaf Area Index). The BF5 Sunlight Sensor improves the accuracy of the SunScan system and allows it to be used even in changing light conditions.

Adaptation

In addition to its use in the SunScan system, the BF5 Sunlight Sensor’s alternative outputs allow it to be used for photosynthesis, illumination and solar energy measurements. For Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), it can be used to control the opening and closing of blinds or brass shutters in response to the sun. The BF5’s ability to measure both direct radiant energy and total radiation allows for optimal use of natural light and solar energy benefits, minimizing the impact on building occupants.
