The newly updated WinDIAS 3 Leaf Image Analyzer – The system quickly and accurately measures leaf area and characteristics – ideal for plant pathology and phenotypic studies. The analysis functions of WinDIAS are suitable for applications where accurate color discrimination is critical.

Delta-T Devices was one of the first companies to develop leaf imaging technology for disease area determination. The WinDIAS 3 Leaf Area Measurement System builds on that expertise, utilizing high-resolution camera and scanner technology to provide researchers with a powerful and easy-to-use analysis tool.

The WinDIAS system is available in three versions – the Multi-Tool System (with an A4 scanner), the Standard System (with a video camera) and the Fast System (which adds a conveyor belt unit and can process up to 800 sheets per hour).

WinDIAS features

Fast threshold
Three thresholds are set, each based on a different user-defined color range. The primary threshold is used for the main areas of interest in the image, such as healthy areas. The secondary and tertiary thresholds are used for other areas, such as infected or heterogeneous areas. Thresholds are set by simply pointing and clicking the mouse on the region of interest. The selected areas immediately become visible as repaints in the image.

Measuring and editing
WinDIAS analyzes thresholded regions to measure area, perimeter, length, width, roundness, aspect ratio and form factor. Calibration is performed against a ruler. Images can be edited on-screen, allowing the user to redraw boundaries, separate objects that overlap, remove unnecessary "noise" and holes, add or delete lines or rectangles, and fill restricted areas with any color.

Number of objects
Seeds, needles or other small objects can be quickly counted in WinDIAS (even if they are touching). The color threshold allows easy discrimination between different types of objects or disease spots. Dust and debris can be removed by setting a minimum object area.

Data and image exchange
WinDIAS imports images in bmp, jpg and tif formats, and results can be saved as txt files for easy import into Excel. Results and images from WinDIAS are easily exchanged with other Windows applications for reporting and further analysis.

Fast batch image processing
WinDIAS can automatically analyze a large number of leaf images, acting as a virtual conveyor. This feature saves a lot of time when processing images acquired in the field or sent from a remote research laboratory. All suitable images in bmp, jpg or tif formats can be processed.

Applications

Agronomy, plant physiology and phenotypic analysis:
WinDIAS provides a flexible range of resources with a wide range of laboratory applications, from simple leaf area measurement to complex color distribution analysis. The addition of the conveyor belt accessory opens up additional application possibilities - see above.

Forestry:
WinDIAS can be used for both deciduous and coniferous species. The surface area of pine needles can be estimated by multiplying the projected area by a conversion factor.

Plant pathology and plant protection:
WinDIAS is optimized for rapid area analysis based on color difference, creating many application possibilities in plant pathology and plant protection. Examples: fungal and bacterial necrosis, leaf tip burn and spotting, fertilizer deficiency symptoms, viral infection and leaf senescence.

Other applications:
WinDIAS is very versatile. For example, it can help analyze aerial photographs to estimate land cover, and can be used with a suitable zoom lens or USB microscope to measure and count small objects.
