There are patchy areas of focal consolidation and discoloration due to congested and hyperemic lung tissue located in both lobes; however, the upper lobe is more affected. The consolidation appears to be concentrated around the bronchioles, which are dilated. The surface of the upper lobe (membrane) is particularly stained.<\/li>\n<li>Additional information:<br \/>\nBronchopneumonia is a form of pneumonia characterized by the presence of inflammatory exudate in the intra-alveolar space, causing consolidation that affects a large and permanent portion of the ventricular space of a lung lobe. It is one of two anatomical classifications of pneumonia (the other being lobar pneumonia). The affected areas in this case show the classic focal red hepatization or consolidation in focal areas, which is due to vascular congestion with red cell spillage into the alveolar spaces, accompanied by increased neutrophils and fibrin. The filling of the airspaces with exudate causes a gross appearance of hardening or consolidation of the alveolar parenchyma.<br \/>\nBronchopneumonia is a subtype of pneumonia. It is an acute inflammation of the bronchi, accompanied by inflammatory plaques in the bronchi and peribronchial lobules of the lungs. It is often contrasted with lobar pneumonia, but it is difficult to apply these classifications clinically because the patterns often overlap. Bronchopneumonia (sometimes called lobular) often causes lobar pneumonia when the infection progresses to affect an entire lobe. The same organism may cause one type of pneumonia in one patient and another in another patient.
