A coroner&#039;s autopsy was conducted.<\/li>\n<li>Pathology:<br \/>\nThis is a long section through the heart, showing the left and right ventricles and the ventricular wall. The notable abnormality is a strikingly thick ventricular wall and left ventricular hypertrophy. The aortic valve is visible and appears abnormal, as is the mitral valve. The ventricular wall is so large that it encroaches on the left ventricular cavity.<\/li>\n<li>Diagnosis:<br \/>\nIdiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, also known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.<\/li>\n<li>Additional information:<br \/>\nSubaortic stenosis is considered acquired rather than congenital and is suspected to arise from an underlying defect in the architecture of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT). The defect may be such that the resulting turbulent blood flow causes progressive thickening and fibrosis of the LVOT and aortic valve. The disease often progresses to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy due to the increased aortic pressure that the left ventricle must overcome. Mild to moderate stenosis is often asymptomatic. As the disease progresses and the stenosis becomes severe, symptoms such as angina and syncope may occur. Investigation and subsequent diagnosis are often prompted by the presence of an ejection systolic murmur on physical examination.
